Japan braces for quake, typhoon risks amid ongoing nuclear crisis

A Japanese nuclear safety agency spokesman said Friday nuclear power stations across Japan were making preparations to guard against risks of frequent tremors and the upcoming typhoon season.Hidehiko Nishiyama, deputy director-general of the Nuclear and Industrial Safety Agency, said at a news conference at the Prime Minister's Office that the emergency preparedness missions at all the nuclear power plants will be completed this month.

He said, when a major quake or tsunami just like the one that hit the Fukushima No.1 nuclear power plant occurred, even if there would be loss of power supply and cooling system, there would be no damage to the spent fuel.

An earthquake measuring 5.6 on the Richter Scale jolted Fukushima Prefecture and its vicinity early Friday Morning. It was the latest of a series of tremors that jolted the northeastern prefecture where the crippled Fukushima plant is located. A magnitude-7 quake struck the prefecture earlier this month. The facility is still leaking radioactive substances into environment.

Nishiyama said that the agency would incorporate the experience it had learned from the major earthquake and tsunami on March 11 into a current safety guideline to ensure the safety of the power stations in the country.

Regarding the upcoming typhoon season, Nishiyama said based on the data of typhoon in Japan historically, the buildings in the nuclear power stations are designed in a way that it would fully endure the force of typhoon. And, the agency will check the operations of the nuclear plants to ensure their safety.

Tokyo Electric Power Co. (TEPCO), operator of the crippled Fukushima No. 1 power plant said the facility will be stabilized to a condition known as "cold shutdown" in about six to nine months.

The typhoons often peaked in August or September, but according to the data of the Japanese Meteorological Agency, one of the earliest cyclone that passed over northeastern part of Japan was in May, 2004.
