UAE eGovernment holds workshop on social media guidelines and Web standards for government bodies

Dubai, 1 March 2011 - The United Arab Emirates eGovernment launched guidelines for social media usage and updated Web standards at a workshop for the UAE government entities, ministries and authorities held on March 1, at The Palace, The Old Town.

The workshop was attended by General Managers, Executive Managers, IT Executives, Government Communication Executives and Webmasters from the Federal Government bodies.
H. E. Salem Khamis Al Shair Al Suwaidi, Director General, General Information Authority, opened the workshop with a welcoming speech in which he highlighted the results of the first government website evaluation conducted by the UAE eGovernment team. He talked about the methodology of the report and evaluation process, and explained how the result had been achieved.

Al Suwaidi said: "The evaluation of the government websites is not done for the purpose of judgment, but to help all of us develop Web presence of the Government and the way we deliver government eServices and e-Information to people in the UAE."

Referring to the guidelines' documents developed by the eGovernment team, Al Suwaidi added: "Our work on this field comes in line with our decision to apply the concepts of the second generation of eGovernment Gov. 2.0. In this we have been inspired by H. H. Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum Vice President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai; who long ago established accounts on both Facebook and Twitter and has been using them to communicate and interact with people."

The documents presented guidelines on Multimedia, Web content, Social Media Networking, eParticipation and Open Data policies. It also included an updated Web standards document.

The Updated Web Standards declared at the workshop spelt out the internationally accepted uniform practices and procedures that government bodies should follow for their website layout and design to be compliant with the recommendations laid out by World Wide Web Consortium (W3C).

In addition, the announced guidelines comply with the requirements identified by United Nations eGovernment Survey which are used by the United Nations to assess the readiness of eGovernment programmes around the world.

The team also launched the guidelines for using the social media by government entities. This document was prepared in partnership with Dubai School of Government with contribution from Gartner Inc. and United Nations eGovernment Survey team. The document provided the government entities with guidelines on how to leverage various social media tools in responsible, safe and effective manners to communicate with their clients and the public and engage them in designing/delivering government programmes and services.

The workshop brought out how by abiding to these guidelines peoples' participation in eGovernment and eServices will increasingly become easy, efficient and pleasing. This is particularly important to the UAE since its eGovernment aims to elevate its position at UNPAN's E-Readiness index and to be a competent and customer-oriented platform. The workshop is a step towards achieving the same.
