The government of Qatar will soon include among its online services an e-payment platform to facilitate financial transactions between citizens and the government. This online payment platform, dubbed QPay, will be hosted under Hukoomi (www.gov.qa), the country’s one-stop e-government portal created by the Supreme Council of Information and Communication Technology of Qatar (ictQATAR).
QPay will be launched in light of the record amount of payments made through Hukoomi in the past year, as reported by ictQATAR.
Online government payments made through the site increased to QR1.1bn (US$302 million) last year, up from (US$123 million) in 2007.
All 100 government ministries and public bodies in Qatar provide online services and financial transactions through Hukoomi. Currently, the e-government portal offers 275 services and 56 e-services.
New services under QPay will include customs clearance, online recruitment services and processing of personal documents.
QPay, being under Hukoomi, is part of the i-Gov program of ictQatar, which aims to modernise the Qatar government’s services by offering more available, accessible and effective e-services.
i-Gov was initiated to futher the national agenda to modernise the government in order to increase transparency in the public sector.
“Hukoomi brings government closer to the people it serves while demonstrating Qatar’s commitment to building a modern and responsive government,” said Dr. Hessa Sultan al Jaber, Secretary General of ictQATAR.
Hukoomi is a local term that stands for a “a more open, transparent government that listens and responds to needs of its constituents,” according to information from ictQATAR.
Hukoomi currently features easy website navigation through ‘quick links’ that take users directly to popular online payment services, such as electricity and water bill payments.
The Qatar government is working towards enhancing the navigability and usability of its online services with the upcoming launch of QPay.
