ADSIC holds the UAE - Korea Expertise Exchange in IT Security workshop

Abu Dhabi Systems and Information Center (ADSIC) held a workshop entitled "UAE - South Korea Expertise Exchange in IT Security", on Sunday, March 13th, at Hilton Hotel. The workshop was organized pursuant to the partnership agreement signed in December 2009 between ADSIC and Korean "Knowledge Development Institute" (KDI), in order to develop the Information and Communications Technology (ICT) sector in Abu Dhabi.

The event featured strong presence from the Korean side: HE. Joong Kyung Choi, Minister of Knowledge Economy, Oh-Seok Hyun, President of KDI, Simon Suh, President and CEO of "Korean Internet and Security Agency" (KISA), along with South Korean Information Technology (IT) and Information Security (IS) experts.

From Abu Dhabi, a group of Abu Dhabi Government Entities (ADGEs) representatives attended the workshop; including Abu Dhabi Police (ADP), Department of Economic Development (DED), Health Authority - Abu Dhabi (HAAD), and Critical National Infrastructure Authority (CNIA).

"This workshop is a single step among several other implementing steps, in application of the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU), signed between ADSIC and KDI on December 27th, 2009, during the visit of the Korean President, Lee Myng Bak, to UAE" HE Rashed Lahej Al Mansoori, Director General of ADSIC, said.

Al Mansoori added in the opening speech, which was delivered by Mohammed Al Khamiri, Director of Strategy and Planning, instead, that "the meeting is a good opportunity for knowledge transfer, and to glean the deep-rooted Korean expertise in this crucial sector, for both public and private sectors."

"We are quite sure that both sides possess necessary skills and know-how that would positively help them reap strong benefits, in a way that ultimately stabilize Abu Dhabi's e-Government initiative and practices regionally and internationally, within the Information Security Policy framework, which was approved earlier by the Executive Council in 2008, and carried out jointly by ADSIC in cooperation with ADGEs."

On the other hand, Mr. Choi Joong-Kyung expressed his pleasure with the rapid developments in the Emirate's e-Government initiative, and how keen it is in exchanging best practices in all fields covered by the Partnership, especially in IT. In his point of view, all these efforts will gradually push the UAE capital towards full adoption and implementation of knowledge-based economy concepts.

Oh-Seok Hyun, President of KDI, said that "ADSIC has successfully laid down the basic foundations for enabling ICT in Abu Dhabi, which led to its current evolvement as the new driving force for economic development."

He also praised the Center's partnership with United Nations in the IT domain, by organizing the World Summit Award (WSA) and the Global Alliance for Information and Communication Technologies (UN-GAID) last December, as both events "contributed towards ICT growth worldwide."

"Through our partnership," he added,

"We shall strive to promote such internationally leading position through our strong collaboration, at present and for years to come, in green IT application and human capital development." Hyun also highlighted the Korean experience and how it managed to be among top countries in building anti-intrusion IT systems.

Simon Suh, President and CEO of KISA, held a presentation about Information Security activities in South Korea, in which he highlighted fields of cooperation between the latter and Abu Dhabi in this field, including digital signature, Computer Emergency Response Center, and IS policies and standards applicable in South Korea.

The workshop also featured a comprehensive overview of Information Security Program in Abu Dhabi, given by its Manager, Mohamed Karmastaji, highlighted major milestones of the program, its current status, and how it plans for the near future. Both sides then held extensive discussions and exchanged views about mutual concerns, through which many constructive feedbacks were provided.
