Steps Need To Be Taken To Improve Brunei's E-Government

The development of Brunei Darussalam's e-Government will not be effective if the Sultanate continues to see "reluctant growth" in Information Technology (IT).
This observation was made by Legislative Council member, Yang Berhormat (YB) Dato Paduka Awang Haji Idris bin Haji Abas, during the 7th Legislative Council session yesterday.
Reiterating the importance of embracing Information Communications Technology (ICT), he noted that the IT industry could be classified as one of the industries that contribute towards the Sultanate's economic development.

In response, YB Pehin Datu Singamanteri Colonel (Rtd) Dato Seri Paduka Awang Haji Mohammad Yasmin bin Hj Umar, the Minister of Energy at the Prime Minister's Office, noted that among the reasons behind the "failure" of the e-Government were lack of commitment by parties involved in the project and lack of human resources skilled, in the business process engineering and ICT management projects.

According to him, the Brunei Government has reviewed this matter and taken steps to improve governance among the E-Government Leadership (EGLF), Chief Information Officer Dialogue (CIO) and Project Review Committee (PRC).

Measures have also been taken to rationalise e-Government organisations such as unifying the National E-Government Centre with the E-Government Technical Authority Body under EGNC, he added.

The Brunei Government has also taken initiatives to strengthen service infrastructures and encouraging the usage of ‘E-Services', said the minister.
