Asean ICT Masterplan Can Help Malaysia Become Regional Hub

The Asean ICT Masterplan 2015, which will be launched on Friday, will provide Malaysia the opportunity to become a regional hub, says Telekom Malaysia Bhd (TM).

"It will give opportunities for everyone ... but for Malaysia, it will provide the opportunity to become a regional hub alongside Singapore," said group chief executive officer, Datuk Seri Zamzamzairani Mohd Isa.

He told this to reporters on the sidelines after the opening of the 10th Asean Telecommunications and Information Technology Ministers' Meeting by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak here Thursday.

Zamzamzairani said TM, as the industry leader, hailed the masterplan as it would benefit members of the Association of South-East Asian Nations (Asean), not just in terms of connectivity but also bringing economic benefits.

"In reality, we can get all the connectivity among the Asean countries in terms of free flows of voice, video or data traffic," he said.

Meanwhile, Axiata Group Bhd's president/group chief executive officer, Datuk Seri Jamaludin Ibrahim, said the masterplan, from the broadband aspect, would only contribute if there were enough applications and contents to support the development.

"In that aspect, we will work with any content providers or any value-added partners to make the broadband a complete offering to the consumers," he said.

Asked lowering the cost of bandwidth in Asean, Jamaludin said Axiata, as the regional mobile operator groups, supported the idea as it would benefit regional consumers.

"On our side, we will cooperate with the government," he said.

Jamaludin said Axiata's plans to enhance the data and mobile broadband segments was in line with the government's efforts to transform the country into a knowledge-based economy by 2020.

The data and mobile broadband are the biggest growth segments for Axiata.
